This San Francisco gay marriage thing (go SF!) has got me thinking. Perhaps we should leave "marriage" to religious organizations and have the state simply recognize "domestic corporations". (I think domestic corporation is more fun than civil union, but whatever.) Really, why does the goverment need to recognize a marriage? For essentially the same reasons that businesses incorporate. To form a legal entity that can receive benefits, pay taxes, participate in contracts, etc. The government doesn't (or at least shouldn't) care about the sexual habits of the principals of a corporation, why should they care about the sexual habits of the members of a domestic corporation?
Heck, let's take this to the logical extreme and allow domestic corporations with more than two members. Ok, maybe one step at a time... :)
